Hell yes dude. This is motivating as all heck. Your head is in the right place, now get in that sacred ass chair and, stupid ass distracting culture be damned, in the flow of what matters. Nothing I read or write on here brings me the joy, the meaning of time spent with my project. Preach. I'm paraphrasing but that's what sticks with me because it's true. I'm becoming a paid subscriber not because I want special treatment. Please feel free to ignore the shit out of my comments if it means you are zoned in. I'm doing it because I believe in your work. Your voice is fresh and smart and clear. You have talent and you know what get's in the way of the goods. You've inspired me to be my best, less distracted writer self. It is much appreciated.
that sacred-ass chair!! Yes!! it means a lot to hear that this helped motivate and inspire you (makes me feel like im using my powers for GOOD!) and OMG thank you for upgrading to a paid subscription!! I really appreciate it, both for what it means practically (making money! from writing! omg!) and for what it represents spiritually: an exchange of energy and an encouraging vote of confidence. i appreciate your thoughts always, james, thank you!
Yes indeed, my friend. A vote of confidence. I look forward to reading your words every Monday evening. No pressure or anything. I typically rotate subscriptions after a year or so but happy to know I will be buying you a coffee per month for the foreseeable future. There's no way I could regret this decision short of you becoming a nazi or something, which I find unlikely considering you seem like a nice person.
So cool to hear you look forward to the work. Thank you so so much. And yes absolutely, revert back to free whenever you need/want to! not many things in this life can be guaranteed, but I definitely feel comfortable guaranteeing that I will not become a nazi lmaoooo so we're all good on that front!!
Yes!! It's honestly really satisfying to scroll through your spreadsheet and identify patterns, look at how much progress you've made etc. Hope it supports you! Thanks for reading <33
This so so motivating omd!!! Do you recommend Scrivener over something like Word or Google Docs? I’ve seen so many people using it but I’d love to know what makes it your go to!
omg I'm so glad!! thank you for reading and YES lfg with the focused writing!! When I was in the drafting stage, I think using Word or Google Docs would have been just fine, but now that I'm revising, I'm very glad I have Scrivener. I hope I explain it in a way that makes sense lol but basically you have all these tabs in the sidebar that allows for easy navigation. So like each of my chapters is in a different tab, so I can be revising chapter 7 and then think, "Wait, did I already say this in Chapter 3?" and very easily navigate to just chapter 3 and quickly scan it. This feels harder when you're working with one giant doc that's just separated by page breaks. I have tabs for brainstorming, character sketches, timeline, research links etc in the side bar too. Allllllll of this, plus my original draft, are all in the same document. I think if I was just using Word, I'd have like 25 documents scattered around my laptop and it would be way less organized haha.
It is sooo true Lindsey -- the distractions will get ya! I like to use the pomodoro method - setting a timer and writing without any distractions for 30 minutes or an hour and then taking a break, then doing it again!
Truly! I'm thinking a good website blocker would help too. idk why pomodoro method scares me LOL i'm basically doing that already so I should just go for it. i even have a cute lil egg timer... ty for your companionship in this, caroline!! <3
Today's technology. It's so easy to get distracted. I am thinking to do it the way they did it long ago. Ok not that long ago, Hemingway or any writer has their note book pencil or pen and wrote. Some had their typewriter. They had distractions to. I think it's just easier with online writing and computers making it easier. I do it too. I think as long as you catch it and try to maintain it, you'll be good. I know it. 🫶❤️🥹💌📚
I can soooooo relate to this. Amazing job blocking off the time and sticking with it! The world is so noisy and distracting but it’s such a pleasure to get quiet and be with the work, isn’t it?
yes!! I used to say I always strive for writing to be "fun," and I do aim for that much of the time, but a more accurate word really is "pleasurable." sometimes the pleasure comes from fun, but other times it comes from the satisfaction of just getting deep with the work. that really can only truly happen if I'm attentive to it. thank you kristin <3

I know you got this. I believe in you.
It is so hard to stay focused and committed, glad you’re doing what you need to do to remove distractions. You got this!
